1000000% This is what is driving many of the issues we face. If you make the dividing line between "health" and "wellness" so blurry, it distracts from the real science.
Exactly, Lara. That blurry line between “wellness” and “health” creates confusion and investors often don’t know where to place their bets. The dilution of scientific credibility is a big risk, especially in women’s health where we’re still fighting for legitimacy. Thanks for calling it out so clearly.
Thank you for continuing to educate me with your informative posts. This clarity is important not only for investors but for all women, like myself, who are confused about what 'real science' is. It often seems like a marketing strategy until you dig deeper.
Thank you, Bonnie. That means a lot. The line between science and storytelling is so often blurred in this space, and it’s exactly why we need more investor-grade clarity. I’m so glad the post resonated with you. More to come
This is such a great post. I am the co-founder of a wellness company My Happy Flo that provide women with holistic options to alleviate PMS, period pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and other menstrual discomfort. When we realized a large number of our customers were women with conditions like fibroids and were turning to us to avoid hormonal solutions and surgeries, we knew we had to go beyond the traditional wellness brand and start validating our supplements. We invested in clinical trials to prove our product worked in as little as 4-8 weeks (1-2 menstrual cycles) with over 70% of participants reporting lighter flows and 82% reduction in pain improving their overall quality of life. In this space, unfortunately, a lot of women’s health supplement brands are not run by women. We also do not see a lot of brands that take that extra step, but it should be necessary with the explosión of wellness options and it still being a very unregulated industry.
I am so glad there are spaces that exist such as this online. Keep writing about women’s health. We need this!!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, Necole. It’s powerful to hear from founders who are listening closely to what women actually need and taking steps to validate their work in a space that’s often overlooked or dismissed. It’s exactly these kinds of insights and experiences that help move the conversation forward. Grateful you’re part of it.

And just to make it all worse and more absurd—WOMEN'S health startups are more likely to get venture/angel funding when their founders are ALL MEN. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/oct/08/womens-health-tech-less-likely-to-get-funding-if-woman-is-on-founding-team
